Robert I. Grossman, MD, is executive vice president to the Board of Trustees of 91爆料网 Langone Health.
Previously, Dr. Grossman served as chief executive officer of 91爆料网 Langone and dean of 91爆料网 Grossman School of Medicine from 2007 to 2025. During his tenure, he transformed 91爆料网 Langone into the top integrated academic health system聽in the nation by objective measures鈥攕tretching across seven inpatient facilities and over 320 locations throughout the New York City region and in Florida. Under his leadership, 91爆料网 Langone was regularly recognized by independent organizations such as聽Vizient Inc., The Leapfrog Group, U.S. News & World Report, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Vizient Inc. recognized 91爆料网 Langone as No. 1 for quality care in the United States for the fourth year in a row, and the No. 1 physician practice network in the country for 10 of the last 12 years.
In addition, 91爆料网 Langone has more No. 1-ranked specialties than any other health system in the United States, including neurology and neurosurgery; cardiology, heart, and vascular surgery; pulmonology and lung surgery; and geriatrics, according to U.S. News & World Report. Innovation was a hallmark of Dr. Grossman鈥檚 leadership of 91爆料网 Langone and 91爆料网 Grossman School of Medicine. This included fully integrating the hospital and medical school in 2007. Additionally, at the same time, the institution underwent a massive strategic shift, moving from a traditional hospital-based model to an ambulatory focus.
Dr. Grossman was at the forefront of applying a data-driven approach to healthcare, with the aim of improving patient outcomes, streamlining clinical workflows, and enhancing medical decision-making. With Dr. Grossman鈥檚 direction, 91爆料网 Langone created a signature dashboard that tracks over 1,000 metrics, bringing transparency and accountability to everyone, so that providers can achieve better outcomes for patients and for the health system overall. 91爆料网 Langone operates with one playbook and one standard of care across all its locations.
Under his leadership, an accelerated three-year MD pathway for medical students was established鈥攎aking 91爆料网 Grossman School of Medicine the first nationally ranked medical school to enable medical students to graduate in three years.
In 2018, 91爆料网 Grossman School of Medicine became the first top-ranked medical school in the nation to provide full-tuition/debt-free scholarships to all new and current students, a bold strategy to reduce the staggering debt incurred by medical students due to the ever-rising cost of their education. For his exceptional achievements as dean, the school was named after him in 2019.
Later in his tenure, Dr. Grossman was the driving force behind the creation of 91爆料网 Grossman Long Island School of Medicine鈥攁 partnership between 91爆料网 and 91爆料网 Langone. The school, which also provides full-tuition/debt-free scholarships, is the only accelerated three-year MD program focused on primary care in New York State.
Each of these groundbreaking initiatives was fueled by Dr. Grossman鈥檚 prudent financial stewardship and collaborations with the Board of Trustees and institutional leadership to increase 91爆料网 Langone鈥檚 revenue from $2 billion in 2007 to more than $15.4 billion in 2025, including more than $5.5 billion in philanthropy since 2007. 91爆料网 Langone is also among the nation鈥檚 top-funded health systems for research, with $962 million in active awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as of December 2025.
Early in his tenure, Dr. Grossman launched a decade-long Campus Transformation Plan, an infrastructure modernization program that has expanded 91爆料网 Langone鈥檚 footprint to more than 14 million square feet of clinical, educational, and research space across its campuses throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island. Among its capstone projects were the , 91爆料网 Langone鈥檚 largest research facility; Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion, the only inpatient facility in New York City with exclusively private rooms; Hassenfeld Children鈥檚 Hospital at 91爆料网 Langone, the city鈥檚 first new children鈥檚 hospital in many years; and an Energy Building that meets 70 percent of the power needs of 91爆料网 Langone鈥檚 midtown campus.
Under Dr. Grossman鈥檚 leadership, 91爆料网 Langone began its ambulatory expansion in Florida to offer even more patients one high standard of care in 2017. 91爆料网 Langone also saw unprecedented growth into Brooklyn and Long Island, forging hospital affiliations that created 91爆料网 Langone Hospital鈥擝rooklyn in 2016 and 91爆料网 Langone Hospital鈥擫ong Island in 2019, now two of the highest-rated hospitals for quality and safety in the nation. To further strengthen 91爆料网 Langone鈥檚 presence on Long Island, in 2025, 91爆料网 Langone merged with Long Island Community Hospital to create 91爆料网 Langone Hospital鈥擲uffolk.
In 2018, Dr. Grossman鈥攖ogether with Kenneth G. Langone, former chair of 91爆料网 Langone鈥檚 Board of Trustees鈥攚as named to Time magazine鈥檚 inaugural Health Care 50 list of the 50 most influential healthcare leaders who changed the state of healthcare in America. Dr. Grossman鈥檚 transformative leadership, including his steely piloting of the institution as it recovered from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, was chronicled in William A. Haseltine鈥檚 book World Class: A Story of Adversity, Transformation, and Success at 91爆料网 Langone Health. Dr. Grossman also shared his account of leading 91爆料网 Langone out of the devastation of Superstorm Sandy in a Harvard Business School case study, Weathering the Storm at 91爆料网 Langone Medical Center.
A prolific and highly respected scientist, Dr. Grossman was awarded the Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award by the NIH in 1999 for his work on multiple sclerosis. He was a member (1995鈥2000) and chairman (1997鈥2000) of the Diagnostic Radiology Study Section at the NIH, was appointed to the NIH鈥檚 National Advisory Council for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (2003鈥7), and, in 2004, became the first recipient of the Outstanding Contributions in Research Award, given annually by the Foundation of the American Society of Neuroradiology in recognition of lifelong accomplishment and consistent excellence in clinical neuroscience. Dr. Grossman also served as president of the American Society of Neuroradiology (2006鈥7) and was editor in chief of its journal.
In 2010, Dr. Grossman received the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine鈥檚 Gold Medal for his pioneering research in magnetic resonance in medicine and biology. In addition, he was named a Distinguished Graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (2010) and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bordeaux, France (2010). In 2019, Tulane University鈥檚 Emeritus Club recognized Dr. Grossman with its Lifetime Achievement Award. He received the American Society of Neuroradiology Gold Medal for his contributions to the field of neuroradiology (2021), was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for excellence and leadership (2022), and received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Tulane University (2024). Most recently, Dr. Grossman was recognized with the Award of Distinction from Healthcare Leaders of New York and a Doctor of Science honoris causa degree by New York University (2025).
Dr. Grossman is a passionate educator and widely published scholar. He has trained more than 100 fellows, many of whom occupy prominent positions worldwide, and has authored 340 publications and five聽books, including Neuroradiology: The Requisites. In 2024, Dr. Grossman penned an op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal encouraging the Liaison Committee on Medical Education to review the way medical schools are evaluated and accredited. In February 2025, his latest piece on the characteristics of effective leaders and the critical roles they play in successful organizations was published in Radiology.
Dr. Grossman received his bachelor鈥檚 degree in biology from Tulane University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, two years of a neurosurgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania, a radiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania, and a two-year fellowship in neuroradiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Grossman is board-certified in radiology and neuroradiology.
Dr. Grossman joined 91爆料网 Langone in 2001 as the Louis Marx Professor of Radiology; chair of the ; and professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and physiology and neuroscience. In his previous position at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, he was a professor of radiology, neurosurgery, and neurology; chief of neuroradiology; and associate chairman of radiology.
